Which of the countries on the long list I sent this morning were actually suspended, I don't know. It isn't on the CITES website yet. </span><span style="color: rgb(41, 47, 51); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 22px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: pre-wrap; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; display: inline !important; float: none; background-color: rgb(245, 248, 250);">That's the list that the CITES Standing Committee considered at
its meeting this week. They won't all be suspended. This happens every year - the list is published and a bunch of them get their reports filed. That's why only 14 were actually suspended. But which 14 I don't know. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you are planning any imports/exports to any of the countries on that list.
</span>If a country is suspended, it can't issue any CITES permits. Even
if you imported something with a permit from that country, the USFWS
would reject it. <br>
<br>
Not every country enforces all suspensions. A huge number of
countries don't even have implementing legislation. A huge number
have no effective enforcement mechanisms. A huge number don't file
annual reports. So it is a safe bet that many don't pay any
attention at all to suspensions. The US, of course, does. I've seen
imports from suspended countries come into the US and they are
always rejected. And the hassle of getting them back is intense. <br>
<br>
This is an excerpt from a USFWS Division of Management Authority
from 2012 but I believe it is still an accurate description of the
impact of a recommendation to suspend trade insofar as import into
the U.S. is concerned.<br>
<br>
"The United States will continue to prohibit the import of any
species subject to a CITES species trade suspension. <b>This
prohibition applies to all imports except specimens that</b> meet
the personal or household effects (50 CFR §23.15), artificial
propagation (§23.40), bred-in-captivity (§23.41), preConvention
(§23.45), <b>registered scientific institution (§23.48) </b>or
traveling exhibition (§23.49) exemption. All such prohibited
shipments or specimens are subject to seizure and forfeiture.

trade restrictions. Additional information about other CITES trade

So you can still import if the shipment is eligible to move under a
Certificate of Scientific Exchange but if a permit is needed, forget
it. <br>
