I can finally contribute to this listserv!

My background is as a conservator and
interspersed with collections management. I have worked a
bit with wet specimens but not to the extent of most of the
people on this listserv. I’ve been learning a lot from
everyone here! If you’re going with paper over a polyester
label you want to use a high quality acid-free, lignin-free
paper. These can be purchased from a few different suppliers
such as Carr McLean, University Products, Gaylord Archival,
and I believe Brodart. I didn’t check each company so I
can’t confirm if they currently carry on option but I’ve
ordered high quality paper from one or two before. Your most
stable is a cotton or rag paper. There are made without
wood/tree materials and are known to last for a long time
without deterioration. Claims of 100-300 years are not
uncommon. They are considered the top archival papers;
however, you pay for it. Sometimes these or others are
marketed as ‘permanent paper’, this is generally a sign of
good quality but there’s no laws around someone calling any
type of paper that so make sure it’s from a reputable
archival supplier. You may find some at your local office
supply store, just make sure it is what they say.

If the labels are going in the preserving fluid I’d go with
polyester but if they are staying dry paper ones should be
fine I would think. You would just need to adhere it to the
jar/canister with an archival adhesive that won’t dry out or
let go and leave you with a bunch of labels floating around
your shelf.

Hi Bill,
hi Andy,

well, the answer is not that easy, I guess. The paper
conservators recommended laser printing with high quality
toner for dry labels. As Andy said, this surely does not
work for fluid labels.

Also, as printing is always the combination of printer
(imprinting method) and printing medium (quality of the
paper or cardstock), there might be different results. It
would surely be worth to target for archival quality of the
paper or cardstock, but you have to keep in mind that this
archival "standard" only applies for the top and bottom
layer of the sheet, but not for the pulp in between.

It might be worth to contact paper conservators or
libraries, to figure out what paper or cardstock they could
recommend, and then check for a suited printer (maybe there
is some experience in archival dry labels in libraries).

So no direct answer to your question, I am afraid, but I
hope it helps
