Hi all,

thanks for this nice summary and advertising of the SPNHC wiki on
this subject!

Just want to add a little detail on ISO standardisation of paper:
as to my knowledge, these refer exclusively to the surface and
bottom layer of the paper, but not necessarily for the pulp. Of
course ISO 9706 surly is the highest quality one can aim for, but
we had for example issues with archival paper of highest possible
quality being produced by a small company which has full control
on all ingredients, and which is highly recommended by paper
restaurateurs and libraries: Either binders or fillers of the pulp
immediately started swelling and corrupted the structural
integrity of the paper.

Also "imprinting" can produce different results: even though laser
printing (for dry labels) has been recommended by paper
restaurateurs because of the long-term stability of the pigments,
successful printing and long-term stability of the print requires
some sort of roughness of the paper surface, otherwise the printed
letters do not get imprinted into the paper. Usage of archival
quality ink cartridges - where the ink is soaked into the paper
and penetrates it - has advantages.

You should therefore test the paper you would consider useful in
your collection with your printers first, as the label is a result
of paper quality AND printing method. Even good paper can give bad
results if the printing method doesn't work with this paper ...

All the best
