<p class="MsoNormal">Just to echo MJ – I wanted to extend a big thank you to the team for your efforts. Meg Geiss-Mooney brought the event to our attention mere hours after it happened, and Rebecca and I were able to contact the museum with information about
the NHR. Their director wrote back promptly to say that the situation was under control, and I think that was in big part due to the local network of support that MJ mentioned.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Burlington Fire Department’s response is a wonderful model for how successful prior communication can be. I think we can use this as a great case study for future preparedness efforts.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt">Dear Everyone: I just received an email back from Dave at the Pringle located at UVM. They have done a great job. All wet materials are boxed and frozen (they had freezers on campus) and will be going to
Belfor in Boston for freeze drying. All other damp materials are air drying in different locations on campus. The collections will be moved out of Torrey Hall from Tues through Thurs. to secure space in the Botany Department. Done and Done!

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt">I also wrote the Burlington Fire Department an email to praise their excellent response. They had been in the building prior to construction as well as during construction to monitor. They knew where the collections
were and their significance. They responded within two minutes, got tarps on the collection storage cabinets before the hoses were turned on. It pays to plan.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt">I know Dave is grateful for everyone's concern and help. I'm just so excited to see that within 4 hours of this event, our NHR team was alerted, our local VT team was notified and service providers were contacted.

than 24 hours after a fire, sparked by construction work, ripped through the roof of Torry Hall, recovery has begun.

<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">“I drove in yesterday morning and said well, that could be it, that could be the end of my life, my professional life. I started
here 43 years ago, when I was hired as curator of this collection,” said Dr. Dave Barrington, director of the Pringle Herbarium.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">Luckily, a majority of the artifacts in the Vermont Natural History Museum were unharmed.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">“We've got a collection, it's essentially intact, and we are just going to go forward and figure out and secure the little damage
there is,” Barrington said.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">Barrington also said some items in the Vermont Natural History Museum do have major water damage.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">“There is always material that is in process, it's getting ready, it's getting prepared to be added to the collection, and those
collections took a hit,” Barrington said.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">In 2014, the university received a $470,000 grant to upgrade the museum.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">It allowed for metal cases to be installed. Without that protection, things could have been much worse.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">“The wooden cabinets would have incinerated, we would have lost the whole thing,” Barrington said.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="m4516075760428749033gmail-added-to-list1"><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#080000">Buildings and organizations across campus are now stepping up, offering temporary space for artifacts. Wet items will be laid out
to dry or put in a freezer to be slowly worked on.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
