quality of Vermiculite that has not been touched on is its
usefulness for shipping very fragile specimens, particularly
things like Thorny Oysters (Spondylus) that have
considerable mass but that are covered in very breakable
spines. Vermiculite forms itself around things well and when
slightly compacted prevents them moving at all. It does not
catch on things the way shredded paper or horsehair can, and
is cheaper, lighter and easier to source than Excelsior
(wood wool).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Thanks for the invite! I've been interested in developing best
practices for wrapping and shipping specimens sent on
institutional loan so this thread piqued my interest. But
since my expertise deals with vertebrate fossils, a COG
submission on this topic should probably come from someone who
regularly handles wet collections.<br>
<br>
Rachel's suggestion of the SPNHC Wiki is great too. I'm
supportive of both these initiatives. Getting H&S
information out to the people entrusted with handling these
specimens and making decisions about materials and methods for
shipment is important.

funny coincidence - James Maclain (NHM London) just brought
this up in an internal conversation. Actually there is no
reason to use it, and simple paper towels surely do even
better as absorbent material for IATA packaging, compared to
vermiculite. For A 180 packing, the requirement is that the
absorbent material must be sufficient to hold the entire
fluid per packaging in case of leakage. There are no further
specifications, and even toilet paper would do a perfect
job, but admittedly tends to be rather unstable compared to
normal paper towels when wet.<o:p></o:p></p>

I receive such shipments, I carefully open the outer
packaging and remove the vermiculite into a large zip-lock
back and immediately rinse the inner packing under water to
avoid the dust; vermiculite is also VERY electrostatic, and

must handle it. And as anyone who has touched the stuff can
attest, no matter how carefully handled, tiny particles of
vermiculite end up suspended in the air one is breathing.
