<p class="MsoNormal">Our experience at UF with thermal transfer paper labels is much the same as Andy Bentley’s. Qualitatively, there have been no detectable changes to the condition of our labels in the 12-13 years we’ve been producing them. The original ones
appear just as pliable, easy to read, and durable as the ones we are printing today.

<p class="MsoNormal">We were at one time shipped the wrong print materials by Alpha Systems – this problem was detected straight away and it did not cause us to throw the baby out with the bath water.<o:p></o:p></p>

Yes, change can be scary, as Tom has indicated below, particularly when there is so much on the line. We are entrusted with the care of specimens that ought be maintained in as best condition possible for a period of time that should exceed many multiples of
our lifespans. To me at least, this means keeping up with and evaluating improved methodologies and greater efficiencies in specimen care. This list and the many thoughtful professionals who contribute their knowledge and experience to it do a good job in
aiding us in the endeavor.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#1F497D">Yes Andy, I thought you would say that, but the problem is your own words below. “…longevity…” and “...that will stand the test of time…”. We know that carbon pigmented ink on good quality archival paper has
done this. We don’t know yet what polyester will do. You may well be proven right in time, but other examples scare. Our Copenhagen 75 g glass jars have good quality plastic lids that back in the 1960’es were thought to be able to last for eternity. After
more than half a century they have started to crack, and we have thousands and thousands of them…<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="DA">To me, this seems like a lot of additional effort (not to mention the fact that this technology is on its way out and ever harder to maintain) to produce labels that are inferior in both quality and longevity to those produced
by thermal transfer printing on spin bound polyester media. The initial monetary investment may be greater but the reward in terms of Museum quality labels that will stand the test of time far exceeds this.
