As a certified drone pilot myself and a curator for an invertebrate collection I agree with Andy that it would be highly unlikely for any damage to result from flying close to these types of specimens. Many of drones available on the market have sophisticated obstacle avoidance systems and experienced drone pilots can maneuver in extremely close quarters with amazing accuracy (and speed). The obvious concern is the experience of the drone operator as already pointed out. That is a more relevant question in terms of responsibility of care. The benefits of promoting natural history collections with non-traditional ways of engaging people seems to outweigh any potential risk in my opinion. I only wish now that I had some cool, large invertebrate specimens to fly over with my drone. Alas, most of my invertebrates are tiny and would not make for a very interesting video. But a brilliant idea! I would love to see the link to the video if you can share that. Thanks,<br>

Imagine being able to fly down an aisle of open drawers in a collection much like those iconic images from the Smithsonian. Something like that would be so much more engaging that a static image. Same goes for ethanol collection shelves or exhibits like our iconic panorama here at KU.<br>

As a certified drone pilot myself and a curator for an invertebrate collection I agree with Andy that it would be highly unlikely for any damage to result from flying close to these types of specimens. Many of drones available on the market have sophisticated obstacle avoidance systems and experienced drone pilots can maneuver in extremely close quarters with amazing accuracy (and speed). The obvious concern is the experience of the drone operator as already pointed out. That is a more relevant question in terms of responsibility of care. The benefits of promoting natural history collections with non-traditional ways of engaging people seems to outweigh any potential risk in my opinion. I only wish now that I had some cool, large invertebrate specimens to fly over with my drone. Alas, most of my invertebrates are tiny and would not make for a very interesting video. But a brilliant idea! I would love to see the link to the video if you can share that. Thanks,<br>

I've just seen a promotional video taken by a drone flying inside a natural history museum, including getting close to real specimens such as mounted dinosaur skeletons. What do you all think of this? The video is a very engaging experience. I am mulling over what message this sends to the public about a museum's attitude concerning its responsibilities for professional care vs increased public exposure. Do the benefits of such promotion justify this?<br>

In addition to what has already been said, I also doubt the majority of<br>
those viewing the videos would have any concerns about the safety of the<br>
objects. Most museums struggle with objects being touched when they are<br>
not supposed to be handled and I think that these days we are so<br>
accustomed to drone videos that many people would enjoy the views but<br>
not think about the risks, especially those outside the museum sector.<br>

At the time it was filmed our publicity folks forgot to clear it with collections staff and it did cause quite a stir, and a change in policy.<br>
We in collections and research were concerned that members of the public would see the cool video and then think that they could visit the museum and freely fly drones through the galleries, putting specimens at risk.<br>
Nothing was damaged during the filming (unless you count some bruised interdepartmental relationships).<br>

In addition to what has already been said, I also doubt the majority of<br>
those viewing the videos would have any concerns about the safety of the<br>
objects. Most museums struggle with objects being touched when they are<br>
not supposed to be handled and I think that these days we are so<br>
accustomed to drone videos that many people would enjoy the views but<br>
not think about the risks, especially those outside the museum sector.<br>

i think that drone videos are in fact a very nice possibility for<br>
non-museum people to have a better look in a museums function. Specially<br>
in collection that are not accessible for everyone. Here is a very nice<br>
example done by the Montanhistorisches Dokumentationszentrum<br>
(montan.dok) at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum in Bochum, its not natural<br>
history collections, but you will get the idea:<br>

I think that if there is professional piloting done in companionship of<br>
the local conservation team, the result can be very good for giving a<br>
nice insight in the collections.<br>

I can understand that sometimes it seems like new medias can be<br>
challenging and seem to get just a sensational effect. But at the same<br>
time we have to get the fact that it is 2022 and this kind of promotion<br>
attracts (specially younger) people to get involved with collection work<br>
and learn in some different way what museums do and why they are here for.<br>

So from my point of view videos like this can be very helpful for<br>
promotional use.<br>

Off course a good plan of what and how it is going to be shoot is very<br>
important for the safety of the collection.<br>

The SPNHC Membership Committee is looking for two Co-Chairs to take up position following the June ABM. Training/guidance support will be provided where necessary.<br>
<br>
The role of Chair(s) involves:<br>
Co-ordinating and managing membership development and dues structure, marketing and communication with assistance from the Committee Members<br>
Maintaining the Membership database and associated webpages, answering members' enquiries, sending renewal reminders and announcements<br>
Submitting one ABM and two newsletter reports annually<br>
Determining and organizing opportunities for promoting the Society, e.g., advertising at the meetings of other societies virtually, in person, or with conference materials.<br>
Liaising with other SPNHC Committees, Council, Treasurer and Editors to provide information and promote and facilitate diversity, equity and inclusion in SPNHC.<br>

Well stated.<br>
What a great way to convey the size and diversity of collections. No doubt some risk is possible but, as you and others have well argued, it can be managed to a very low level. We can?t let imaginable possibilities prevent us from demonstrating collections in effective ways to the public (who usually, actually owns them.)<br>
Jane Henderson and I have recently argued for not considering risks to collections independent from benefits of use. Abstract attached and video of presentation available on request.<br>

i think that drone videos are in fact a very nice possibility for non-museum people to have a better look in a museums function. Specially in collection that are not accessible for everyone. Here is a very nice example done by the Montanhistorisches Dokumentationszentrum (montan.dok) at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum in Bochum, its not natural history collections, but you will get the idea:<br>

I think that if there is professional piloting done in companionship of the local conservation team, the result can be very good for giving a nice insight in the collections.<br>

I can understand that sometimes it seems like new medias can be challenging and seem to get just a sensational effect. But at the same time we have to get the fact that it is 2022 and this kind of promotion attracts (specially younger) people to get involved with collection work and learn in some different way what museums do and why they are here for.<br>

So from my point of view videos like this can be very helpful for promotional use.<br>

At the time it was filmed our publicity folks forgot to clear it with collections staff and it did cause quite a stir, and a change in policy.<br>
We in collections and research were concerned that members of the public would see the cool video and then think that they could visit the museum and freely fly drones through the galleries, putting specimens at risk.<br>
Nothing was damaged during the filming (unless you count some bruised interdepartmental relationships).<br>

In addition to what has already been said, I also doubt the majority of<br>
those viewing the videos would have any concerns about the safety of the<br>
objects. Most museums struggle with objects being touched when they are<br>
not supposed to be handled and I think that these days we are so<br>
accustomed to drone videos that many people would enjoy the views but<br>
not think about the risks, especially those outside the museum sector.<br>

We've taken that approach for a wet collection digitization project we've<br>
been working on at volume in the past few months.<br>

Recommended (no failures yet, despite sometimes wet hands): Logitech K380<br>

Less recommended, but not horrible (a couple of failures): Arteck<br>

We are excited to introduce the next professional development opportunity from iDigBio's Digitization Academy: a short, free, online course on photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is a method that can produce 3D models of organisms and their habitat for innovative use in research, education, science communication, and other activities. This course introduces biodiversity specimen collectors, curators, and other biodiversity researchers to photogrammetry with special, though not exclusive, emphasis on the documentation of specimens at the time of collection. We will introduce photogrammetry as a method of 3D modeling, the uses of photogrammetry, image capture for photogrammetry (especially in the field), an example software workflow that has been optimized for plant specimens (but is applicable to other types), sharing and archiving options, and additional high-value resources. The course is open to everyone from the biodiversity research and adjacent communities from around the world.<br>
The course will occur on Friday, May 6, from 3?5 ET, and it will be led by Nicole James (Florida State University?s Department of Art), Alex Adkinson (FSU?s Department of Art), and Austin Mast (FSU?s Department of Biological Science and College of Communication and Information). The course will be presented in English. Hello everyone,<br>
I have a question about insurance valuations (a recent NHCOLL discussion topic) that suddenly got real for us. We loaned a few specimens to a travelling Art/Science exhibit including a small pangolin. The museum was burglarized in the middle of the night (glass windows and cases smashed) and multiple artworks and specimens were taken including a pangolin, a beaver and beaver skull and a fossil. I need to place a value on the pangolin, which is irreplaceable. What are practices surrounding placing value on specific specimens (as opposed to entire collections) that are for all intents and purposes, irreplaceable?<br>
<br>
Are there murky places on the web where specimens are bought and sold where we could post the missing pangolin?<br>

I'm involved in the private collections sector.<br>
<br>
Do you have photos of the specimens stolen? I can put it out to the network<br>
of private collector and specimen markets out there and someone will report<br>
it if it shows up for sale.<br>
<br>
Same with the fossils.<br>
<br>
Photos of any identifying marks will help greatly.<br>
<br>
It would probably be passed off as a vintage specimen if it comes up for<br>
sale, to get around questions about lack of paperwork.<br>
<br>
The specimen collections community is large but very well connected. So if<br>
it spread widely enough, the minute it comes up for sale somebody would see<br>
it.<br>
<br>
I don't have any current input for valuation. However pangolin specimens do<br>
exist in the hands of private collectors and transactions do occur. I'll<br>
reach out.<br>
