Apologies for cross-posting. I'm currently looking for people who work with collections that have natural history dioramas of any size to participate in my MA Preventive Conservation research.<br>
<br>

Even if you?re not certain what materials are in your dioramas, it would be really helpful if you could still take part and say that. Finding out that lots of people are unsure about the materials in their dioramas would be useful data in itself.<br>

I'll share what I learn from the survey through future publications, and will happily provide an email summary of the findings to anyone who?s interested.<br>

We ask applicants to have a draft version of an educational module that uses biodiversity data to teach an ecological concept (could be an adaptation or new materials). Over the six meetings we will work in small teams on the modules to optimize the modules and align learning objectives with the 4DEE Framework.<br>

Participants will receive $1000 stipend and $2200 to travel to the meeting of your choice.<br>
<br>
We welcome participation from individuals and teams, graduate students to tenured professors, and educators at all types of higher ed institutions including CCs, TCUs, MSIs, HSIs, HBCUs, PUIs and Research Intensive institutions.<br>

3D Printing and 3D Printed Objects Survey - Deadline Extended to June 24th<br>
<br>
The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) is looking for additional participants to take an online survey about 3D printing in collecting institutions. Anyone who has interacted with 3D printing within a cultural heritage context can contribute valuable information to inform our research!<br>
<br>
The survey touches on a broad range of activities - from collections care to 3D printing for mount making and display - and is designed to let respondents select which sections to respond to as well as opt out of sections that do not pertain to their experience.<br>
<br>
The survey will take approximately 10-30 minutes to complete (depending on the number of sections responded to) and the deadline for responses has been extended to Friday, June 24, at 11:59pm EST. Please also consider forwarding this call to appropriate colleagues and/or other professional networks.<br>

Hi all,<br>

We are looking to buy cardboard boxes to house our bird/mammal skull and skeleton collection and wanted to buy acid-free, un-buffered boxes. This is because we did not want the added calcium carbonate in the box and we also are worried the buffer might fail at some point. However, it is very hard to find a un-buffered boxes of a wide variety of sizes. We looked into UniversityProducts, Gaylord and Talas as suppliers but none had a good selection of un-buffered boxes.<br>
<br>
Our first question is how important is using un-buffered boxes vs. buffered ones? The second is: Does anyone have a name for a good supplier of un-buffered boxes that have a good selection of sizes?<br>

I have question about skull and postcranial bone collection and what is the best way to preserve and mark them.<br>
<br>
What kind of practices you use to preserve skulls and postcranial bones? Right now we just have them in plastic bag or/and in boxes. Is this fine for them?<br>
<br>
And is there a better way to mark separate bones or the only way to mark them with their ID is just to write ID for every little bone that we have for this specimen. Right now we have a basically full skeleton of a seal and there are a lot of small bones and it would take a lot of time to mark these all, that is why i asked maybe there is a way to make this thing easier.<br>

At AMNH we number every bone that is large enough to write on. The remainder we put in a small glassine envelope which is also numbered. Currently our skeleton numbers are 5 digits. We use a fine Rapidograph pen with India ink.<br>
<br>
I guess the question is how will your specimen be used? Our specimens are often used in side by side comparison so the chances of mixing are high. I often find bones in the wrong box but am able to reassociate them because they are numbered.<br>

Here at NNHC-HUJI we, too, number the bones in our skeletal collection.<br>
However, we do not number them by writing directly on the bone - this<br>
creates situations where mistakes can't be corrected in a good way and<br>
where changes in the numbering system (which may, and do, occur in many<br>
collections over the years) result in writing a new number alongside a<br>
pre-existing one - or pre-existing ones in plural! - rather than taking off<br>
the old number (which is preserved in the relevant specimen record in the<br>
catalogue book and in the database).<br>
<br>
Instead, we apply a film of Paraloid B72 (dissolved in acetone) to the bone<br>
and write on the film - not on the bone itself. Thus, it is possible to<br>
remove or correct numbers. PB72 is a well-known material in conservation<br>
and is supposed to be durable and stable enough to be of good use in<br>
numbering specimens. Yes, all this still requires a lot of work, but this<br>
is part of making sure that skeletal parts do not get mixed up, while<br>
taking into consideration any changes that may happen in the future.<br>

Hi Joosep - At the MVZ we also number every bone that's large enough to<br>
make the number legible...for the reason given of making sure that bones<br>
are associated with the correct specimen. This includes very small bones<br>
(hummingbirds, shrews, etc.). We use a fine archival pen for numbering.<br>
In the event of a numbering mistake, we gently scrape off the number with a<br>
razor blade and renumber.<br>

This work is done mostly by undergraduates, and we ask for a sample of<br>
their handwriting in advance to make sure that they can write small and<br>
legibly.<br>
