<div dir="ltr">Dear Simon, Brian, Fran, Mariana, William and Marilyn - <div><br></div><div>Thank you so much for all your replies! </div><div><br></div><div>The marker proved to be extra tenacious in this case (somebody actually said to me it's a pity we don't know what marker that was, as it is one we see doesn't fade!) . I tried ethanol and acetone, plus several other solvents, but although ethanol and acetone worked a little, the number remained very bold on the bone. Simon's method (hydrogen peroxide with a little Ammonium hydroxide) helped lift up some more and somehow did lift everything off some of the bones but not off all of them - maybe different markers were involved, hard to say. In the end I had to give up on the idea of removing the marker completely or even making the old number unreadable (and so less confusing) - so I put on a coat of PB72 in acetone, overpainted that with a layer of white ink, and wrote the correct number in black ink on top of the white layer. I'm hoping this means that the old number is well hidden and that any confusion in the future can be resolved by looking at the info (on "old numbers") in the catalogue. </div><div><br></div><div>Thanks again to everyone, it's great to have such a helpful forum! </div><div><br></div><div>Gali </div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Wed, May 1, 2024 at 10:30 AM Gali Beiner <<a href="mailto:gali.beiner@mail.huji.ac.il">gali.beiner@mail.huji.ac.il</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr">Dear NHColl-listers, <div><br></div><div>I'm having the bad luck of having to remove an old number written directly onto the many bones of an entire skeleton with a black marker, which is proving to be far too permanent. Those of you familiar with such tasks won't be surprised to hear that the only thing with any effect at all is ethanol, but that even so the number is still very much there. I'm hoping maybe people here have some tricks up their sleeve that I haven't tried yet in effort to remove the marker off the bones. Suggestions, anyone? </div><div><br></div><div>Best wishes, </div><div><br></div><div>Gali </div><div><br></div><div> <br clear="all"><div><br></div><span class="gmail_signature_prefix">-- </span><br><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><font color="#000080" face="tahoma" size="2"><img width="295" height="590" style="width: 57px; height: 107px;" src="https://docs.google.com/a/mail.huji.ac.il/uc?id=0B5B3I3QnN7dsSzNkbGlLNDNGWG8&export=download">Gali Beiner (ACR)</font></div><div><font color="#000080" face="tahoma" size="2">Conservator, Palaeontology
