Event description:
Consisting of nearly 280,000 private test pressings and commercial recordings, Yale’s collection of Historical Sound Recordings (HSR) includes a variety of formats, including wax cylinders, 78s, LPs, reel-to-reel and cassette tapes, and CDS, among others. The heart of the collection encompasses the earliest known recordings of opera and classical song literature, but also extends broadly into instrumental and symphonic music, jazz, American musical theater, historical performance practice, and the spoken arts. In addition, HSR is the primary repository for recordings of performances by Yale faculty, students, and campus music organizations. HSR will display several historical formats and set-up a listening station for 78rpm recordings of great early 20th century musicians.
