On October 28th, the Fourth Plenary Session of the18th Communist Party of China (CPC)’s Central Committee ended with a nearly 17,000-character “resolution” that aims to establish “rule of law” in China by 2020. The “resolution” honors hitherto long-neglected Chinese Constitution, which, among other things, enshrines freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Many condemns the “resolution” as yet CPC’s another attempt to consolidate its grip on power. Others see it as part of President Xi’s concerted efforts to align the CPC’s interests with those of the Republic—reforming China’s much politicized and corrupt judiciary is to reign in wayward party officials, who undermine CPC’s legitimacy as China’s ruling party. The “resolution”, after all, calls for further professionalization of judges, establishment of “circuit courts” to prevent extra-legal interventions, and a lifelong liabilities accounting system for court officials. Can China achieve rule of law under single-party rule? What does President Xi have on his mind—rule of law or rule by law?<br>

Winston Lord ('59) graduated magna cum laude from Yale University and is a member of the Skull and Bones society. He was Kissinger’s special assistant during his phenomenal 1971 visit to China that paved the ground for the US rapprochement with China. Later he went on to become the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, US Ambassador to China, and Assistant Secretary of State. Mr. Lord will address the recent legal developments from a historical perspective. He would also talk about his secret meetings with Mao (all 5 meetings), Zhou (every Nixon and Kissinger meeting), and Deng (more than 100 hours).<br>

Jamie Horsley is the Senior Research Scholar in Law and Executive Director of The China Law Center at Yale Law School. She earned an MA in Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan and a Diploma in Chinese Law at the University of East Asia. She was also the director of the National Committee for US-China Relations and the Commercial Attaché in the US Embassy in Beijing. As the leading scholar on Chinese legal reform at Yale, Mrs. Horsley will address the various implications of China’s most ambitious legal reform programs in decades.<br>

A number of Yale professors will be invited to hold workshops, and Yale students will moderate discussion sessions and serve as mentors for the attendees.<br>

We are currently seeking volunteers to lead workshops and discussions as part of the conference. Workshops should be given on specific topics and should provide students with an opportunity to consider different subjects related to Asian American affairs. They run approximately one hour in length, questions included. Discussions will be used to facilitate further consideration of the presented topics, and generally run 30 minutes each - but they are multiple sessions throughout the day, and discussion leaders will be expected to be there for all sessions.<br>

The Chinese Adopted Siblings Program for Youth, also known as CASPY, is a biannual cultural event held on Yale campus. Directed towards families with adopted Chinese children, it seeks to educate and inform both parents and children about the Chinese culture in a fun and relaxed setting. This year, we need your help! Sign up to be a Big Sib or Volunteer!<br>

"For my Digital Photography project, I am hoping to put together a series about Asian American stereotypes and racial issues. For one of the photos, I am hoping to replicate the "Asian Tourist Stereotype" by having around 10 Asian Americans pose with iPads, cell phone cameras, and nice cameras, while a couple Asian Yale students walk by and look over embarrassed. The goal is to raise questions on grouping Asians together and why it's okay for non-Asians to use ipads and fancy cameras to take pictures.<br>
<br>
I am hoping to do the shoot this Saturday at 2pm by the Beinecke, and it should be very quick-- 30 minutes maximum. I would only need models who are willing to stand in a group and pretend to be a tourist group. If you have phones, ipads, or cameras please bring as well! I would greatly appreciate your help!"<br>
