<p dir="ltr"> On February 2, 2014, near 7,000 police in Dongguan, the “Chinese Sex Capital” in Guangdong province, launched a massive crackdown on prostitution, resulting in about 1000 arrests in the span of three months. A total of five party officials were investigated and removed from office during the raids. According to the official news agency, Xinhua News , Dongguan businesses expected to lose 50 billion yuan ($8 billion) due to the raids. China’s State Television CCTV denounced prostitution as a moral decay. Ironically, high-ranking members of the Communist party are often on the receiving end of the services provided by the four to six million sex workers in China.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In retrospect, was the Dongguan crackdown on prostitution a justifiable cause and an effective approach?</p>
