Abroad at the time of the Tiananmen repression in 1989, he has since made his career in exile, chiefly in <st1:country-region w:st="on">New Zealand</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">England</st1:country-region></st1:place>. His books published in English include _Non-Person Singular_ (1995), _Concentric Circles_ (2005), and _Unreal City_ (2006). A selection of poems from his career was published in 2008 as _Riding Pisces._ His work has been translated into German, Danish, Italian, and French, among other languages.
