About The
Book: The Guardians: Kingman Brewster, His Circle, and
the Rise of the Liberal Establishment by Geoffrey Kabaservice begins
with a description of the events of May Day 1970 in New Haven and at Yale
and then flashes back to chronicle the rise and fall of a powerful group
of friends and how together they shaped liberalism. Yale President
Kingman Brewster s circle of friends included McGeorge Bundy, Elliot
Richardson, John Lindsay, Archbishop Paul Moore, and Cyrus Vance.
These men educated at the same private schools and belonging to the same
country clubs as many others separated themselves early by challenging
the nation s operating system. Looking at the very social order
that had put them in power, they sought to modernize and improve
it. They believed that they could overcome the flaws and prejudices
of their fathers generation while retaining the traditions of that same
white Anglo-Saxon Protestant elite. Once they were in positions of
power, they did just that. Brewster and his friends led their
institutions and the nation in establishing a system based on merit
rather than aristocracy. They helped us to define liberalism and in
doing so created a legacy that still survives today. Engaging,
lively, and meticulously researched, The Guardians reclaims the
importance of Brewster and his generation and illuminates their place in
American history.
