<blockquote type=cite class=cite cite="">BARBARIC YAWP! <br><br>
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the first edition of Walt <br>
Whitman's Leaves of Grass, a milestone in American, gay, and indeed
<br>
world literatures. On Monday, April 11, from 4:30 to 6:30, all <br>
members of the Yale community are invited to gather in WLH 309 to <br>
celebrate Whitman's legacy and in particular the 1855 edition, which
<br>
Malcolm Cowley called "Whitman's Buried Masterpiece." Even
those <br>
familiar with Whitman's poetry in its final form may be surprised and
<br>
stirred by this first outpouring.<br><br>
Professors and students will be reading aloud from the poetry--feel
<br>
free to bring your own copy and follow along! Hopefully this will be
<br>
followed by some more or less informal discussion over wine.<br><br>
"I too am not a bit tamed....I too am untranslatable,<br>
I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world."<br><br>
Sponsored by the Yale English Department, the Larry Kramer Initiative,
<br>
and the Yale Collection of American Literature at the Beinecke <br>
Library. Please contact joshua.platt@yale.edu with questions.<br>
