Please join us for a reading by Native American poet, novelist, and
screenwriter Sherman Alexie on Friday, September 16, 3 pm, at Battell
Chapel (corner of College and Elm Streets). This event is free and
open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Sponsored by the
Walter McClintock Memorial Fund of the Yale Collection of Western
Americana and the Yale Collection of American Literature at the Beinecke
Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Davenport College, the Native American
Cultural Center at Yale University, and the Yale Group for the Study of
Native America. <br>

Sherman Alexie is among the most important living Native American
writers. He is the author of more than 15 books of poetry and fiction,
including <i>The Business of Fancydancing: Stories and Poems</i>, <i>Ten
Little Indians: Stories</i>, <i>Smoke Signals</i>, <i>The Lone Ranger and
Tonto Fistfight in Heaven</i>, and <i>Old Shirts & New Skins</i>.
Among many other awards, he has received National Endowment for the Arts
grants, the American Book Award, and the Independent Spirit Award for
best first screenplay. His most recent book was a finalist for the 2003
Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction.<br>

<b>Related Events at the Beinecke Library<br>
</b> <br>
<b>September, 2005</b>: A small exhibition will highlight strengths of
the Library’s rich and ever-growing collections in the areas of Native
American history, culture, linguistics, and literature; the Library’s
continuing commitment to collection development in these and related
fields will be evident in the display of important recent
acquisitions.<br>
<br>
<b>Wednesday, January 25, 2006, 4 pm</b>: Native American novelist Debra
Magpie Earling will give a reading at the Beinecke Library, followed by a
public reception. Debra Magpie Earling’s first novel, <i>Perma Red,
</i>was among<i> </i>the most widely acclaimed novels of 2002. Earling
was awarded the Western Writers Association Spur Award for Best Novel of
the West, the Mountain and Plains Bookseller Association Award, a WILLA
Literary Award, and the American Book Award. <i>Perma Red </i>has been
favorably compared to the work of Louise Edrich, Leslie Marmon Silko, and
Sherman Alexie. Earling’s work has appeared in <i>Ploughshares</i>,
<i>Northern Lights</i>, <i>Northeast Indian Quarterly</i>, and
anthologies including <i>Circle of Women</i>, <i>Talking Leaves: An
Anthology of Contemporary Native American Short Stories, The Last Best
Place: A Montana Anthology, </i>and <i>Reinventing the Enemy's
Language.<br>
