The Department of English and the Writing Concentration are proud to
present the first of an annual series of joint readings called The Yale
Reading Series. The aim of the series is to bring back to the campus Yale
graduates who have gone on to distinguished careers as writers. This
first reading will feature poet Elizabeth Alexander, playwright John
Guare, and novelist Claire Messud. Their reading will take place on
<b>Monday, April 16, at 5pm, in St. Anthony’s Hall, 483 College
Street.</b> For over three centuries, from Jonathan Edwards to Thornton
Wilder, from James Fenimore Cooper to Mark Strand, Yale has trained
writers who have become an essential part of the country’s literary
heritage. This new series seeks to celebrate that contribution. Elizabeth
Alexander, who graduated from Yale College in 1984, is the author of five
collections of poems, including <i>American Sublime</i>, and a verse
play, <i>Diva Studies</i>. John Guare graduated from the Yale School of
Drama in 1963. Since 1949 his plays have been produced, among the
best known of them are <i>The House of Blue Leaves</i>, <i>Lydie
Breeze</i>, and <i>Six Degrees of Separation</i>. Claire Messud, a 1987
graduate of Yale College, has written <i>When the World Was
Steady</i>, <i>The Last Life</i>, and the 2006 bestselling novel <i>The
Emperor’s Children.</i> The reading is free and open to the
public.<br><br>
