Friday, September 7<sup>th</sup> at 7 p.m., Atticus Bookstore Caf� will
host Karen Chase reading from her new book, <i>Land of Stone: Breaking
Silence through Poetry</i>, the story of<b> </b>her interaction with a
psychiatric patient she met during her work in a hospital outside New
York City. <br>
<br>
When she first met the patient, he was a young man in a locked
psychiatric ward, who had given up speaking six years before. During the
course of their two-year poetic exchange, they composed 180 poems
together by passing a pad of paper back and forth and he began to speak
again. <br>
<br>
Harold Bloom calls <i>Land of Stone</i> �a poignantly eloquent
narrative.� Chase�s poems have appeared <i>The New Yorker</i> and <i>The
New Republic</i>, and have been anthologized in <i>The Norton
Introduction to Literature</i>, <i>The Norton Introduction to Poetry,
Best American Essays 2006,</i> and Billy Collins�s<i> Poetry 180</i>.
