Jonathan Safran Foer, author of two novels and dozens of short stories,
will be presenting a public reading at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25,
at St. Anthony Hall, 483 College Street, as a John Christophe Schlesinger
Visiting Writer to campus. Foer is one of the most acclaimed and
controversial young novelists writing today. After studying with Joyce
Carol Oates at Princeton, he published his first novel, <i>Everything Is
Illuminated</i>, in 2002 to widespread and fervent critical acclaim,
winning the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction and <i>The
Guardian</i> First Book Award. Inspired by Foer’s own familial research
in Ukraine, the book follows a young man named for the author on his
surreal quest for family and personal identity, and was adapted for the
screen in 2005. Foer’s second novel, <i>Extremely Loud and Incredibly
Close,</i> examines post-9/11 New York City through the eyes of a
precocious nine-year-old, and was published in 2005.<br>

John Christophe Schlesinger Visiting Writers are supported by a gift from
Richard and Sheila Schlesinger of Pound Ridge, New York, in honor of
their son, John Christophe, a talented undergraduate writer. Mr. Foer’s
visit is co-sponsored by Jonathan Edwards College.<br><br>
