<p class=MsoNormal>The next John Christophe Schlesinger Visiting Writer coming
to Yale is novelist Junot Díaz, appearing for a public reading on Monday,
January 25 at 7 p.m. in Linsly-Chittenden 102, 63 High Street. His visit is
co-sponsored by the Departments of English and African American Studies and
Ezra Stiles College.<br>
<br>
Junot Díaz was born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, and is author of <i>Drown
</i>and of <i>The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao</i>, winner of the National
Book Critics Circle Award and the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, among other
awards. His fiction has appeared in <i>The New Yorker</i>, in many issues of <i>Best
American Short Stories</i>, in <i>Pushcart Prize XXII</i> and in <i>The O’Henry
Prize Stories 2009</i>.<br>
<br>
He has received a Eugene McDermott Award, a fellowship from the John Simon
Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, a Lila Acheson Wallace Readers Digest Award,
the 2002 Pen/Malamud Award, the 2003 U.S.-Japan Creative Artist Fellowship from
the National Endowment for the Arts, a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute
for Advanced Study at Harvard University and the Rome Prize from the American
Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the fiction editor at <i>The Boston Review</i>
and the Rudge (1948) and Nancy Allen Professor of writing and humanistic
studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<br>
<br>
The John Christophe Schlesinger Visiting Writer series was established to
enrich the experience of student writers in Yale College. It is supported by a
gift from Richard and Sheila Schlesinger in honor of their son, who was
dedicated to the pursuit of creative writing. Each year several distinguished
writers come to campus to give a public reading and to confer with student
writers in a variety of settings, formal and informal.<br>
