Measure 68 - eighth note lick there

Roman Carnival

Rehearsal 2 to rehearsal 3 - accompaniment figure in 2nd and
3rd clarinets. Exaggerate the hairpin decrescendo, be
rhythmic and confident when playing

Tempo 1 (allegro vivace) - keep it light and short; keep
shorter notes and dotted quarter notes and tied notes short -
the dotted quarter note tied to a quarter note should be
released on the quarter note; also, this section should be
very quiet

15 after rehearsal 6 - again, a soft, quite figure. Keep it
soft so that the brass can build to fortissimo 7 before
rehearsal 7

at the end, make sure you do a sfp crescendo two measures
before the 2/4.

Rocky Point Holiday

work on those 16th note licks: e.g.: 2nd bar of rehearsal 6,
5th bar of rehearsal 25, 3rd bar of rehearsal 30

Children's March

at 53, focus on having a detached style. Not as short as
the allegro vivace section in Roman Carnival; Children's March
at 53 should have slightly longer notes, but it should still
be detached, have separation between notes, still somewhat
light and bouncy though

133 - start soft at mp and build to the fortissimo at 141

Folk Song Suite, Movement 1

at the beginning, make sure you have a big dynamic and style
change between first four bars and the 5th bar; again, very
light and soft at 5

at the "to Coda" sign, where there's a trumpet/solo clarinet
solo, play accompaniment softly, rhythmically, and with good
tone

In the marcato 6/8 section in the middle of the movement,
play softer and lighter, so you don't tire yourself out

Folk Song Suite, Movement 2

Mark these rehearsal letters in if you don't have them: bar
18 = rehearsal B, bar 31 = rehearsal C, the Poco Allegro is
rehearsal D, 18 after D is E, Tempo Primo is F

Work on playing the section starting 2 before E as quietly
as possible

Folk Song Suite, Movement 3

pickup to bar 9 has to be softer; we want oboe to be the
predominant sound. There should be a large dynamic contrast
between this section and where it goes to fortissimo 12 bars
later

the 3rd bar of the trio - has to be much softer! play as
quietly as you can, so that when it goes to 2/4, there's a
large contrast with the fortissimo

In general

make sure you prep a good reed for the concert, one that you
can play soft on and can tongue quickly and easily on

2nd and 3rd clarinets need to play out more to balance the
1st clarinets

soft (piano) sections need to be much quieter

exaggerate the dynamics more, especially in places where
there's a piano section followed by a forte/fortissimo section

Please find an hour or two this week to practice those licks and
review some of the things we covered. These couple hours of
practice will help tremendously! And make sure you have a good
reed to play on for the concert!

See you on Tuesday.
Love,
