Hey clarinets,

Here's a summary of what we went over in the clarinet sectional last
Sunday. Please find an hour some time this week to go over your
parts outside of rehearsal. Also, make sure you have a good reed
for Friday!

Huck Hodge, mvmt. 4: this is the most rhythmical movement, and
we want crisp, accurate sixteenth notes. Make sure you're
constantly counting sixteenth notes in your head. For the
sextuplets, break them up into 3s (da-ga-da, da-ga-da), and
break the septuplets up into 3 and 4 (da-ga-da, da-ga-da-ga).

Star Wars

Mvmt. 1:

work on the section from 31 to 44, which includes a lot of
hairpin dynamics. Bring out the accents, and bring out the
crescendoes in 37, 38, 40, 41, and 43.

Mvmt. 2:

at 19, when the flute solo starts, play very pianissimo,
but 2nd and 3rd clarinets should bring out their hairpin
dynamics and their quarter and eighth notes

at 44, 2nds and 3rds should play the sixteenth notes as
legato and flowing as possible

from 51 to 57, there's an accelerando followed by a
rallentando - make sure you watch Duffy closely during this
section and stay with him

Mvmt. 3:

at 12 and 24, the eighth notes should be similar in length
(so more legato and less staccato)

can can sections - make sure you're comfortable with the
accidentals (sharps and double sharps).

Mvmt. 4:

practice 19-27

bring out the hairpin dynamics at 28 and 30

48-51 - very legato and piannissimo, play under the harp

work on the triplets in the last 4 measures of the pieces
which segue right into the fifth movement

Mvmt. 5:

from 14-27, play with even, same-length notes and a
constant dynamic

subdivide all the sextuplets, septuplets, octuplets, and
nonnuplets in your head - 3 + 3, 3 + 4, 4 + 4, and 4 + 5.

from 48 to 56, do hairpin dynamics as follows: 2 bars
crescendo, 2 bars descrescendo, etc.

81 to 83: make sure you hit the accented downbeats even if
you need to fake the other notes a little bit

See you at rehearsal today,
