According to the message below (sent to the RLG Authority Design User
Focus Group) the date for releasing the NACO-enabled client for testing
has been postponed (yet again!). The new date is
<font color="#0000FF">mid-March</font>.<br><br>

<blockquote type=cite class=cite cite>Thank you all for your
patience. RLG staff have been working hard<br>
on all aspects of the massive database migration project, including<br>
the RLIN21 client support for NACO.<br><br>
We now expect that we will release the test client for you to<br>
get a feeling of creating and updating Name Authority Records<br>
in the RLIN21 client in mid-March. Instructions for downloading the<br>
test client will be posted on this list. The test client will work on
a<br>
subset of migrated authority records. It will be a test
environment,<br>
and records you create or update will stay in the test system.<br><br>
For production NACO work you should continue to use RLIN<br>
Terminal for Windows.<br><br>
What you can expect in the RLIN21 test client:<br><br>
-- You can use all the existing authority indexes on the sample<br>
database, but since contribution is not part of the test system,<br>
there will be no "pending records" to retrieve.<br><br>
-- Index changes: We have added a "heading word" index
for<br>
all words in a heading, supplementing the "heading
phrase"<br>
browse now available. Personal name indexes will include<br>
dates (subfield d), fuller form of name (subfield q), and<br>
attribution qualifier (subfield j), and can be truncated.<br><br>
-- The displays will be the same as you see in the RLIN21 Web<br>
and client interfaces now, with "see" and "see also"
references.<br><br>
-- Earlier versions of authority records will be available, as they<br>
are now. Note that since the test database is only a subset of<br>
the entire LC/NACO authority file, not all versions may be<br>
available for all records.<br><br>
-- When you look at an individual MARC authority record, you<br>
will be prompted with an Update button.<br><br>
-- You can use the authority workform templates to practice
creating<br>
names and series authority records, and experiment with<br>
customizing them. You can use the F1 help key to retrieve
explanations<br>
of fields and values for each MARC data element, as now provided in<br>
the RLIN21 client for creating bibliographic records.<br><br>
-- The test client will validate field, subfield, and indicator values,
but<br>
will not do specialized editing for fixed-length subfields like 64X$a,
4XX,<br>
5XX, and 7XX$w.<br><br>
-- You can search the RLG Union Catalog (clicking on "Other<br>
RLIN21 databases"), but you will not be able to generate a
heading<br>
from a bibliographic record. You will also not be able to
generate<br>
a heading from a bibliographic record in your local system.<br><br>
All record creation will need to be done using a workform template.<br>
You can save new records in the test database, but you can retrieve<br>
them later only by Record ID.<br><br>
We welcome your feedback, and invite you to use the RLIN21<br>
test client's "Feedback" link for questions and
suggestions. Our<br>
highest priority will be to complete the RLIN21 client for
production<br>
NACO work, and will consider all your suggestions as possible<br>
future enhancements.<br><br>
