Below you will see a summary of public service issues related to
both limited services during Winter Recess and then the changes you will
see after the Orbis upgrade is completed. <br><br>
For the period <b>December 23 through January 2</b>, the OPAC will be
available in read-only mode, and there will be <b>NO PATRON EMPOWERMENT
FUNCTIONS AVAILABLE</b>. This means:
<ul>
<li>No Eli Express service
<li>No Borrow Direct service (either to or from Yale)
<li>No LSF retrieval
<li>No paging from the SML stacks
<li>No holds or recalls
<li>No Bookbag function
<li>No access to Your Library Account
<li>No saving of records or searches
</ul>Orbis should be back up and fully functioning in its updated form on
Tuesday, January 3. At that point, we will see the following
changes in Orbis searching, display, sign-on and functionality:
<ul>
<li>Left and internal truncation implemented
<ul>
<li>? will represent zero or more characters (left truncation)
<li>% will represent a specified character length (internal
truncation); repeat the character for multiple occurences
<li>Examples: ?port will retrieve "airport" and
"carport"; defen%e will retrieve both "defence" and
"defense"
</ul>
<li>The status In Transit will appear on the Title Results Display (it
now appears only in Brief and Long record display)
<li>Search History may contain more than 20 previous searches
<li>CAS/NetID logon for patron empowerment functions (good-bye NetID +
Last 4 digits of the SSN!)
<li>An option to Renew All in Your Library Account (those items that
cannot be renewed will be displayed in red)
<li>Saving, printing, and emailing of records in your Bookbag
<li>Implementation of
<a href="http://www.unicode.org/standard/WhatIsUnicode.html">Unicode</a>
will enable the display of "interlinear" transliterated AND
vernacular language script in the JACKPHY languages
<ul>
<li>These records will be able to be printed and saved but NOT emailed
<li>The browser will be forced to display in Unicode UTF-8. This
will work as long as the searcher's computer has an appropriate
font. This is the case for all public workstations in the library.
</ul>
<li>Implementation of Unicode also means that users can cut and paste
JACKPHY words from any Unicode-compliant Web page or application and
paste them directly into the Orbis search box. This will work best for
Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, and Yiddish (especially using the keyword
index).
<li>Search capabilities in the JACKPHY languages will differ by
language:
<ul>
<li>Arabic and Hebrew appear to be working well with one exception.
When there is a leading article the title index seems to be created
incorrectly. For these titles, try a keyword search instead of a
title search.
<li>For Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, romanization is still the most
effective way to conduct a comprehensive search. Searches in the original
CJK characters might be more efficient in finding a known title, but they
might fail due to variant forms of characters used, variations in spacing
between characters, and some other issues. The East Asia Library staff
will post a detailed list of known issues and work-arounds on the web at
<a href="http://www.library.yale.edu/eastasian" eudora="autourl">
http://www.library.yale.edu/eastasian</a>
</ul>
<li>If you cut and paste from Orbis into a Word document, set the font to
Arial Unicode MS to have the vernacular languages display correctly.
</ul>Check the

Unicode</a>. Once the upgrade is complete, report problems you
encounter in the OPAC through the
<a href="http://www.library.yale.edu/wsg/voyagerproblemreport.htm">Orbis
Problem Report Form</a> or by emailing prodsys@yale.edu. Also note
that there is a News item on the Library's Front Door alerting patrons to
the changes in service during the Winter Recess.<br><br>
