Hey CASA Community,
At the beginning of this election cycle, the Chinese American Students’
Association did not wish to formally endorse a candidate whose platform did
not directly address CASA’s mission or the needs of the Chinese-American
community. However, in light of the recent YCC debate wherein two
presidential candidates denied the presence of institutional racism at
Yale, CASA believes that it needs to take a stance in expressing our
support for a candidate whose views accurately reflect our mission. As per
our mission, which is “to promote awareness of Chinese American culture and
identity among all members of the Yale community”, CASA believes that it is
essential to make transparent the tenuous histories with the administration
that have and continue to implicate the Chinese-American Community here at
Yale. CASA believes that while the administration has taken efforts to
diversify various aspects of this campus, those efforts are not a solution
to eradicating the racism embedded into various institutions that continue
to affect the daily lives of members of our community and beyond.
For the reasons stated above, CASA is expressing our support for Shunhe
Wang. Shunhe’s platform include prioritizing equitable funding for cultural
groups and other inclusive diversity initiatives such as subsidizing
term-time income for low-income students in leadership positions. These
ideas alongside the rest of his platform clearly demonstrate his nuanced
and thoughtful understanding of campus dynamics, his commitment to all
communities on this campus, and his ability to straddle the needs of the
student body and the bureaucratic workings of the YCC.
