some unusual records

Hi...Fiery and sachem skippers were very abundant "down" here at the
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Brooklyn/Queens, NYC. On our annual
late summer count on Sept. 12, we had 41 fiery and 104 sachem
skippers, 28 cloudless sulphurs, 3 red-banded hairstreaks, 3 checkered
skippers and 2 ocola skippers!
Be on the lookout for a late wave of southern strays...unless Floyd
puts a damper on things, or conversely, brings some more up with "him"
!

I saw several males on Buddleia at Compo Beach in Westport over
the weekend. Also, a Phoebis sennae flew straight at me there
and I grabbed it with my hand (no joke!).

People seem to be reporting Catocala with a bit more regularity
now in later August and September. Flushed a C. parta from the
side of a school building in Westport yesterday.
And now for something really different...
On 30 July 1999, on flowers in her yard on Livingston Street
in New Haven, Linda Lindroth captured a male of Morpho peleides
ssp. montezuma! It's in a display case with her now. No
butterfly houses for dozens and dozens of miles, of course.
(This will probably be one of the odder records in the
five years of the Connecticut Butterfly Atlas Project).
