Adding to the summaries of recent counts, there were 25
species seen on the Westport count last Saturday.
This is the second highest total (30 in 1999) for the
count. (Brief pieces aired on WPKN-FM and NewsChannel 12
the Friday before, and the Post should be carrying a
followup article sometime soon). Cabbage Whites were
most common, but were followed fairly closely by several
dozen Great Spangled Fritillaries (noted by other folks on
CTLEPS-L as having a good year). Also, Variegated Fritillaries
and Buckeyes at each of the locations covered on the count
(as just indicated for the East Haddam count). The
most unusual record was a female Baltimore flying in the
parking lot near the beach at Sherwood Island State Park,
w-a-y out of habitat, likely a disperser seeking more
fertile grounds!
