Clay,
Praises abound here in eastern Pennsylvania for including pictures with your
notes. Enjoyed your note the other day about male Banded Hairstreaks
perching, sun orienting, chasing other males, and generally acting like the
territorial bully.
I've got a Banded colony right out my back door. Watching the males in
mid-late June has been an annual anticipated event. I usually stroll out to
see them at 7:30 AM, coffee in hand, to observe their antics in morning's
first rays.
Your latest photo is a Banded as you expected. The gender is female and the
phenotype is pretty standard. Ground color (tan brown) is lighter than males
(slate gray to dark brown) and the postmedian bars/spots usually are lined on
both sides by white. And, yes, Banded females provide a source of confusion
with Hickorys (both sexes).
