I have no problem with this , you are either interested in all that lives around us or not ,
if your not I can do the most simple thing & withdraw from the site which will be no lose to me, and continue to record my finding as I have over the past 50 plus years & share them with NO one.
I'll make an offer at this time , ( Do present Members Wish I Withdraw from the Site) ?? if its a high percentage I will be gone!
and never heard from again.

  Bob,

First let me state that I enjoyed both Bill Yule's ode posting and your story about your grandchild and the snake. I object to neither post. I should also state that I write this as a list owner of several moderated lists.

As long as non-lepidoptera postings don't get out of control I personally have no problem with them. But then again, it really isn't for me to say what should be posted to this list as that is already clearly defined. However, I am very concerned with your attitude as expressed at the end of your message (see below) it shows what I hope is your lack of knowledge of proper "netiquette" and not your disregard for it. These list do tend to deteriorate or fail when netiquette is thrown to the wind.

  Your message stated:

  At 11:47 AM 6/7/01 -0400, you wrote:

The way I see it post your Butterfly news & then add anything of interest dealing with Nature, if anyone out there objects they know how to withdraw from the site.

you should perhaps remember that CBA members were invited (see reprinted email at bottom of message) to join an existing list that while currently open to the public has a charter (can be viewed at
  http://www.peabody.yale.edu/other/lepsl/SBEL.html )
which was in place for several years before we were invited to join. The charter sets fairly clear limits as to what is allowed to be discussed, limits the discussion to lepidoptera and does not open it to nature discussion in general.

The common practice on the web is that by joining, you in fact have agreed to abide by the rules in the charter. IMHO, this means that if other people object to your not following the published guidelines to which all agreed when joining, you should either follow them or withdraw from the site and start your own. We all also need to remember that while Peabody Museum has been kind enough to open this list serve to the CBA and CT public, if they don't like what is happening we can be uninvited and the list access restricted.

Again, I personally have enjoyed everything that has thus far been posted and it is not your non-lep posting that troubles me. What I do take particular objection to is your posted attitude that if members of the list did object to the postings outside of the parameters of the list as they joined it, that they should have to be the ones to withdraw.

If I have misunderstood what you meant by those words, I apologize. But good manners on a list is essential to the list's success and I would hate to see this wonderful list ruined.

  Yours,

  Dori Sosensky

  Connecticut Lep Server
This is going to all Conn Butterfly Members on line.
Yale University has a Connecticut Lepidoptera newsgroup site and member
Larry Gall is willing to put CBA members on the server to receive messages
and information about Conn butterflies and moths. The site can be accessed
by anyone and if you are a subscriber you will get all messages sent to the
site. If you have a question about a moth or butterfly, you can send it to
the site and everyone will get it and in return all answers sent to the
site will go out to all subscribers. A lot of traffic is NOT ANTICIPATED.
If at some point you want off you can easily un-subscribe.
There is no charge for this service.
