Hi All -
In all the years of the East Haddam Butterfly Count, I have always meant to get into the Babcock Pond area (now the Babcock Pond Wildlife Management Area), but never made the time come count day. Well, the time is nigh.
I haven't visited the area since Altasing, and BOY, has it gotten good! There are three main areas that the State has done habitat work, including a dandy wildlife viewing blind and a boardwalk across a wooded pond. There were some great stands of milkweed, and a wildflower field that has great potential. Driving the dirt roads also popped up things like RSPs and Mourning Cloaks.
The List (* means new for me in 2001)
E. Tiger Swallowtail
Spicebush Swallowtail
Banded Hairstreak
*Striped Hairstreak
Grt. Spangled Fritillary
Am. Lady
Mourning Cloak
Red-Spotted Purple
Little Wood Satyr (the next generation / species)
*Common Wood Nymph - lots
*Crossline Skipper - so big and fresh that I was stumped for a minute
*Northern Broken-Dash
*Delaware Skipper
*Dun Skipper
Hobomok Skipper - worn but active
