Despite less than ideal weather, on Monday, May 28, a total of 16 species of
butterflies were found at the Fresh Meadows Sanctuary in Cheshire. The
species list is as follows:
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (1), Cabbage White (4), Juniper Hairstreak (1),
Eastern Tailed Blue (1), Pearl Crescent (26), American Lady (7), Red Admiral
(5), Little Wood Satyr (21), Monarch (1), Juvenal's Duskywing (1), Wild
Indigo Duskywing (1), Indian Skipper (1), Peck's Skipper (7), Tawny-edged
Skipper (4), Long Dash (1), Hobomok Skipper (2)
In a recent message, Bill Yule noted that an invasion of Red Admirals was
moving north from the Southeast US. The fact that 5 Red Admirals were found
at a locality where, in years past, I never found more than a single
individual makes me wonder if the invasion has made its way up to CT. Is
anyone else finding unusual numbers of Red Admirals in CT?
