All:
I have just received notice from two sources that the Nature Conservancy is
adding Papilio appalachiensis (Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail) to the
organization's Natureserve website (www.natureserve.org). It has not yet
been posted, but it reportedly passed their internal review process. This is
the first new species of Swallowtail described in the U.S. since description
of the Ozark Swallowtail.
If anyone is interested in the original description paper, it is available
from The International Lepidoptera Survey at www.tils-ttr.org, by going to
the Taxonomic Report link and scrolling down to Volume 3. The first page can
be viewed via Adobe Acrobat but the entire paper needs to be ordered. I
believe the cost is $5 or $10 postpaid. I have received only a few reprints
and ran out already and xerox copies do an injustice to the report. I
believe you might have to order directly from TILS editor Ron Gatrelle at
gatrelle at tils-ttr.org
If anyone has photos of Tiger Swallowtails from Connecticut, and would like
me to look at them to see if they might be Appalachian Tigers, please write
to me.
