10 AM: Keynote - Victor DeMasi speaking on
"Swallowtails Here & There"
Victor DeMasi has been studying, rearing and tagging swallowtails for over
20 years. He will share with us what he has learned of their life
histories, population and effects of predators. He will also include photos
of swallowtails from other parts of the world , such as Africa and South
America and will bring in some live specimens of caterpillars he is rearing.
Mr. DeMasi is a research affiliate at the Yale Peabody Museum and has
traveled widely in search of butterflies.
11:00 AM - 11:20 AM: Quick Break
11:20 AM - 12 PM: Richard Chyinski's "Butterflies of the Southeast"
Richard Chyinski has made many trips to the southeastern states in search of
butterflies to photograph and enjoy. He puts meaning to the word
"enthusiast" when it comes to butterflies and he will share with us some
stories and photos of his journeys.
12 PM - 12:30 PM: Lunch (not provided, please bring a bag lunch), Plant Sale
12:30 PM - 2:30 PM: Field Trips (One will go for 1 hour, one will continue
until around 2:30)
This year's plant sale theme is food and nectar plants for swallowtail
butterflies. We have an interesting selection (at reasonable prices) that
is sure to keep those big beautiful butterflies in your yard. They will be
available for purchase from 9AM to 1PM.
Directions: From the New Haven area: West on Rt. 34 to Derby. From the
Bridgeport area: North on Rt. 8 to Derby (exit 15). From the Waterbury
area: South on Rt. 8 to Derby (exit 15): Then - West on Rt. 34 for 1.5
miles. Turn right on Cedric Ave., and left on Hawthorne Ave. KEC/OHM
