Started out locally in East Haddam, found a cooperative N. Cloudywing
Then at the Horse Hill Road (Westbrook) powerlines found my first Silver-Spotted Skippers of the year. As usual, they were sitting on exposed perches, guarding and patrolling their turf against most any flying intruders. The photo isn't outstanding technically, but it captures the essence of the bug.
Then on to Mohegan Park in Norwich with Rich Chyinski to hunt for butterflies at the BioBlitz. The park features a lot of hills and woods, with few open areas. Unfortunately, most of the open areas were mowed, so we only had edges to work with. From 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm we found 18 species;
E. Tiger Swallowtail
Clouded Sulphur
Orange Sulphur
E. Tailed-Blue
Pearl Crescent
Polygonia sp.
American Lady
Red Admiral
Red-spotted Purple
Little Wood-Satyr
Dreamy Duskywing
Juvenal's Duskywing
Wild-Indigo Duskywing
European Skipper
Peck's Skipper
Tawny-edged Skipper
Hobomok Skipper
Zabulon Skipper
Due to commitments on Saturday, neither of us could return for the Saturday segment of the BioBlitz, but the final tally of butterflies came in at 21 species.
