On Saturday, 5/4 the following butterflies were found along the top of the
ridge at West Rock Ridge St. Park:
Black Swallowtail (1)
Cabbage White (2)
Falcate Orangetip (4) (all males)
Orange Sulphur (1)
Brown Elfin (15)
Spring Azure (2) (1 form violacea, 1 form marginata)
Mourning Cloak (4)
Juvenal's Duskywing (8)
The most productive area seemed to be the stretch from the Judges' Cave Area
south to the overlook, especially the trail running along the west side of
the ridge.
The violacea form azure was very worn. Hence it would not be a "Cherry Gall"
Azure. Fresh violacea type azures emerging currently should be "Cherry Gall"
Azure, one of the species discussed in Harry Pavulaan's excellent article in
the Spring, 2002 newsletter.
