Connecticut Butterfly Association
Fall Indoor Meeting
Tuesday October 22, 2002
7:30 P.M.
Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station's Jones Auditorium
123 Huntington St., New Haven
Topic: We've Got the Blues out West: But How Many?
Speaker: Paul Opler
The butterfly group known as the "Blues" (Lycaenidae: Polyommatini) have
always captured the interest of butterfliers. And it appears there are
more Blues out west than anyone could have imagined. Paul Opler has
been working on sorting them out. Included in his talk will be stories
of the Didem Blues, "Scintillant" Blues, Azures, and Dotted Blues. The
relationships of these butterflies to their hosts will be explored with
slides showing butterflies, their hosts, and habitats. Some preliminary
research results will be reported.
Paul Opler, author of several books on butterflies, including "A Field
Guide to Eastern Butterflies", is a professor at Colorado State
University where he curates the Lepidoptera collection at the C.P.
Gillette Museum and leads the research of several graduate students. He
actively photographs and collects western butterflies and moths as well
as working on about 4 web sites dealing with Lepidoptera. He is working
on two large butterfly handbooks for North America to be published by
Oxford University Press.
You can view some of Paul Opler's and Evi Buckner's slides at
