Yesterday at Chaffinch Park in Guilford, there were a few worn or past peak
Hackberry Butterflies (or Emperors - A. celtis)...on hackberries to the left
of and to the right of (past the garbage can in the extensive stand of
Hackberry trees) the parking area. A couple of American Snouts were observed
also in the trees near the left side of the parking area. A Question Mark
(winter form), Red Admiral, a couple worn Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and a
Black Swallowtail, along with second brood Summer Azures were seen.
Near Tuttle Point, Broad-Winged Skippers were common around the butterfly
bushes. No other skippers (except for a Pecks) were seen. Clouded Sulphurs
(very large females) were also common...
No Tawny Emperors were seen at Chaffinch...apparently it was too late,
probably by at least a week. It is usually reported that their later brood
(if there is a second brood in New England) is a bit earlier than that of
the Hackberry...The Hackberries were active after 12:30PM. The first Snout
was seen at about 11AM. After about 2:30 to 3PM none of either were active.
The Hackberry Butterflies were perching generally 10 feet or more above the
ground...(males 10 feet, female 10 to 15)...Snouts (males, I believe) were 6
feet or more above the ground...This is an impressive place in terms of
stands of hackberry...
