Visited my mother in Westport yesterday. She insisted that all she had was Cabbage Whites, but sitting by the pool (next to a hickory tree), I suddenly noticed a veritable swarm of small brown butterflies. At first I thought that they were skippers, but then I noticed them landing on the privet hedge. I think that there were about two dozen Banded Hairstreaks, and maybe 10 Hickory Hairstreaks (thanks, Lenny, for making me pay attention to the difference!) Also one Little Glassywing. I thought I caught a glimpse of a Red Admiral darting past, too.
This coming Saturday, July 17, at 10 AM, Lenny Brown will be leading a trip at the John Flaherty Field Trial Area in East Windsor. As always, visit ctbutterfly.org for more info/directions, and be prepared to walk through grassy fields.
Hope to see many of you there!
Diane
