Hi all -

The traditional day for the New London Butterfly Count is my birthday, July 15th, and the plans are for us to meet this Thursday at 8am at Haley Farm State Park in Groton. If the weather looks ominous on Wednesday evening, I will shift the date to Friday, 7/16.

The New London Butterfly Count covers Haley Farm, Bluff Point, Harkness Memorial State Park, the old Waterford Airport, and a few scattered sites in the N.L. area. We have led the country in Coral Hairstreak numbers multiple times, and we usually get at least 5 species of hairstreaks (the overall list is 6). Additionally, Noble Proctor and Grit Ardwin found an American Snout at Haley last week, which would be a new species for the cumulative list.

If you have never seen the 1000+ blooming Butterfly Weed plants at Haley, it is worth the visit for that sight alone!

Bring long pants for walking through the fields, water and a snack, and join us for a few hours or the whole day.
