A group of 12 showed up at Chaffinch Island Park Saturday. Working without a leader (though not without a net!), we found our way to the Jared Elliott Preserve, where we saw (numbers approximate):

10 Cabbage Whites
6 Orange Sulphurs
at least a dozen Monarchs, including a mating pair in a tree--I also brought home 4 eggs
at least a dozen Baltimore Checkerspots
3 Summer Azures
2 Black Swallowtails (one male, one female)
3 Pearl Crescents
2 Eastern Tailed Blues
1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
1 Tawny Edged Skipper
2-3 unidentified skippers (one beige color, one orange color--both avoided capture)

1 Mourning Cloak (on Mulberry Farm Rd. on the way out)

1 Painted Lady at Chaffinch Island Park

1 unidentified black colored swallowtail at Chaffinch

Those who were watching birds and dragonflies also seemed to be happy--many odes at Jared Elliott, a Great Blue Heron on the way to Chaffinch, and a Brown Thrasher at Chaffinch.

Thank you to Janine Bujalski for recording the day's sightings and Roy Zartarian for adding to the list and the Lemmons for providing and excellent bruschetta for the picnic!!

Don't forget--next Saturday, Lenny Brown will be leading a trip to the John Flaherty Field Trial Area in East Windsor!

Diane

p.s. Jared Elliott is a great place, but if you decide to visit it, be sure to wear long pants and insect repellent--there are LOTS of brambles, ticks and mosquitos!
