2006 Taxonomic Identification

and Conservation Workshops

Ferns and Fern Allies

Leader: Les Mehrhoff (les.mehrhoff at uconn.edu)

Date and time: 29 July, 2006, this all-day workshop will begin at 9:00am

Ferns and related plants (club mosses, fir mosses, horsetails, scouring rushes, and quillworts) are always interesting and popular plants. This workshop will cover the basic characteristics needed to identify ferns and fern "friends," illustrate all genera found in southern New England, and discuss the habitats in which they are likely to be encountered. All participants will receive a recently-updated county checklist for the state's pteridophytes and other handouts. The field trip to Nipmuck State Forest in Union will allow participants to see some of the species in their natural environment.

Attendance will be limited to 25 participants. Registration fee: $25 for morning session and $25 for the afternoon field trip or $40 for both aspects of workshop.

New England's Bees: Sampling, Identification, and Conservation of New England's Most Important Pollinators

Leader: John Ascher (ascher at amnh.org)

Date and time: 5 August, 2006, this all-day workshop will begin at 9:00am

John Ascher from the American Museum of Natural History will lead a one-day workshop on bees of the Northeast. The workshop will start off with a talk on the biology of bees, which will touch on their life history, phylogeny, and behavior, and ecological importance. We will then move into the laboratory (for much of the day) to learn a little bee morphology, familiarize ourselves with identification resources, learning our region's most common species, and try keying out a few unknowns. The workshop will conclude with two or three brief talks on the conservation of pollinators.

Attendance will be limited to 20 participants. Registration fee: $40.

Shorebird Workshop

Leader: Chris Elphick (chris.elphick at uconn.edu)

Date and time: TBA (evening prior to 19 August, 2006)

CCB will also partner with the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA) to complement the COA's annual shorebird identification workshop. The COA will conduct a full day field trip to Milford Point and Sandy Point focused on shorebird identification on August 19, 2006. During the prior week (date to be finalized) an evening session will be held at the Storrs campus to provide participants an opportunity to examine museum specimens and learn the fine details of shorebird identification. Please see http://ctbirding.org/news.htm <http://ctbirding.org/news.htm> for more details. There will be no registration fee for this workshop.
