Monday, May 29th- I visited Mansfield Hollow Lake in Windham adjacent to the
Windham Airport. Despite the limited sun and extensive cloud cover, I was
able to find the following species of butterflies:

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (1)
Spicebush Swallowtail (1)
Frosted Elfin (3)
Eastern Tailed Blue (2)
Cherry Gall (?) Azure (2) ( My first of the year. I am assuming violacea
Azures that are exhibiting egg-laying behavior on cherry trees on the edge of a
wooded area are Cherry Gall Azures rather than Summer Azures. While Summer
Azures should be emerging any day now, I would not expect them to be laying
eggs on cherry trees, especially not this early in the season. However, I
welcome comments by any authorities on Azures who subscribe to this list.)
Pearl Crescent (1)
Little Wood Satyr (6)
Dreamy Duskywing (10)
Sleepy Duskywing (1)(My first of the year although the species is probably
at or close to the end of its flight time)
Juvenal's Duskywing (10)
Wild Indigo Duskywing (2)
Cobweb Skipper (1) ((My first of the year although once again the species is
probably at or close to the end of its flight time.)
Hobomok Skipper (1)
Dusted Skipper (8) (My first of the year.)

The lone Sleepy Duskywing was distinguishable from the more numerous Dreamy
Duskywings on account of (a) its noticeably larger size, (b) the brown rather
than silver/gray wrist patches, (c) the fact that the inner third of the
forewing was not much darker than the outer two thirds of the forewing, which is
a typical characteristic of Dreamy Duskywings and (d) it's much stronger,
direct flight 2-3 ft. off the ground. The Dreamy Duskywings had a much weaker,
erratic flight and stayed within a foot of the ground.
