Sometimes it pays to stick around your own house. Somewhere around 7 years ago I planted two Hackberry trees in my yard, mainly because I have had Tawny Emperor a couple of times. In 2005 and 2006 Mourning Cloaks laid eggs in one of the trees.(What a job they can do to a tree.)
An hour ago I was making lunch and looking out the kitchen window I saw a light colored butterfly flying around one of the hackberry trees. The trees are about 100 feet from where I was in the house. "You better have a look!!".
I went down to the tree to find it was an American Snout flying around and stopping briefly at different locations on the tree. I went back to the house to get my camera and took a few distant pictures but no doubt what it is in the image. I don't know enough about the behavior to know if it was laying eggs or not. I did not see it touching down.
It seemed to disappear after a few minutes but I am hoping it will stay around like the ones at in Guilford seem to do.
