Red Admirals

Believe it or not, they're mostly gone from Jamaica Bay. Although paying more attention to birds today, I'd have to say that I didn't see more than 10. It would seem that most have continued to spread northward, with no new infusion from south of here -- for now.

They really are everywhere. I mentioned them on my blog recently and got a comment from Larry Flynn, who surveys the Norwalk Islands for birds regulalry by boat. He said on a recent trip Red Admirals were flying around everywhere out there. Today I was birding on Crook Horn Road in Southbury. Anyone who's been there is familiar with the area that is a former dump for organic materials such as leaves and horse manure. It now consists of nearly an acre of low mounds dense with herbaceous growth, much of it nettles. This morning it was alive with Red Admirals. They really were too numerous to count, especially because they were often landing out of sight on the plants. There were easily several dozen in that area, with ones and twos flying around almost any open area you visit in the Waterbury area.
