On Saturday, 8/20, 14 butterfliers joined me on our annual field trip to
sites in Guilford. We found a total of 27 species of butterflies. The list
for the day, by site, is as follows:

Jared Eliot Preserve (a Guilford Land Trust property)

Black Swallowtail (3)
Spicebush Swallowtail (1)
Checkered White (1) (Obviously, my first of the year; it was nectaring on
New York Ironweed (Vernonia sp.))
Cabbage White (8)
Clouded Sulphur (1)
Orange Sulphur (3)
Eastern Tailed-Blue (3)
American Snout (5)
Pearl Crescent (10)
Common Buckeye (3)
Hackberry Emperor (8)
Monarch (10)
Silver-spotted Skipper (16)
Least Skipper (6)
Fiery Skipper (2) (First of the year)
Peck's Skipper (6)
Tawny-edged Skipper (6)
Broad-winged Skipper (40)
Zabulon Skipper (7)

The American Snouts and Hackberry Emperors were seen in the hackberry
trees along the mowed path starting behind the chain, leading north towards the
railroad tracks. In an interesting departure from their typical behavior,
the Emperors, a species ordinarily active beginning in the late morning
and afternoon, were active at 10:00 AM.

Chaffinch Island Park

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (1)
Summer Azure (1)
American Snout (3)
Great Spangled Fritillary (1)
Question Mark (2)
Hackberry Emperor (3)
Tawny Emperor (2)

Spencer Creek Preserve (a Guilford Land Trust property)

Spicebush Swallowtail (3)
Cabbage White (15)
Red-banded Hairstreak (2)
Pearl Crescent (5)
Hackberry Emperor (5)
Tawny Emperor (1)
Appalachian Brown (1)
Common Wood Nymph (1)
Monarch (8)
Silver-spotted Skipper (8)
Peck's Skipper (4)
Tawny-edged Skipper (3)
Zabulon Skipper (2)

The two species of Emperors were all defending territories up in the trees
along the east side of Three Mile Course in the section bracketed on the
north by the metal gate leading to the preserve and on the south by the
refuge sign. They did not become active until after 1:00 PM when the sun began
shining on the east side of the road and were all still very active when
we finally left at 2:00 PM.
