The Fall 2011 meeting of the Connecticut Butterfly Association will be at
1:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 22 in the Jones Auditorium of the Connecticut
Agricultural Experiment Station, 123 Huntington St., New Haven.
The guest speaker is Maraleen Manos-Jones, author of *“The Spirit of
Butterflies: Myth, Magic and Art” * who will present an illustrated talk of
stories of butterflies and the Monarch migration. has raised, released and
tagged monarchs since 1972, and, after a two month search in 1977, became
the first woman from the U.S. to discover the monarchs overwintering
habitats in Mexico. Returning almost every year since then, she has worked
with local communities in various ways and with Forests for Monarchs, a non
profit reforestation project that has planted close to six million trees
over the past 14 years. She intertwines fascinating science, myth, culture,
art, poetry, legend, and literature, combined with environmental issues, to
share her passion and concern for butterflies and their habitats. She is
also known as Butterfly Woman. She has lectured extensively, including at
Harvard Museum of Natural History, Yale Peabody Museum, National Museum of
Natural History, and the Florida Federation of Gardeners.
