Hi folks, sorry for the delayed posting, 20+ intrepid souls ventured out to West Rock on overcast Saturday morning 5/5/2012 (not one break of sun). Nevertheless the walk appeared to be successful and fun. Butterflies included a number of Vanessa atalanta (Red Admiral), Vanessa virginiensis (American Lady), Vanessa cardui (Painted Lady), a few Polygonia interrogationis (Question Mark), one middle instar larva of Anthocharis midea (Orange Tip) on Arabis (Rock Cress), and one forewing of Papilio glaucus (Eastern Tiger Swallowtail) on the ground. Most of the butterflies were seen at the end of the walk in and around the parking lot at the southwestern terminus of the ridge. Moths included Nomophila nearctica (Celery Webworm), larval nests of nearly mature Malacosama americana (Tent Caterpillar), a female Grammia figurata (Figured Tiger Moth), Metarranthis sp. and several small pyralids/geometrids. "Beating" foliage of Quercus ilicifolia (Scrub Oak) and Carya ovata (Shagbark Hicokry) yielded small larvae of a variety of geometrid and noctuid larvae. Best, Larry
