Canaan, Litchfield Co. CT and Sheffield, Berkshire Co. MA 5/12/12
(plus other surrounding environs)
Weather conditions: clear, warm 75-80 deg.F
Red Admirals, Painted Ladies & Question Marks – Biblical proportions
Now onto the more interesting stuff……..
Giant Swallowtail (Heraclides cresphontes pennsylvanicus) (7 total) 3
in Sheffield, MA along Rannapo Rd. and Bull Run Rd. – 3 more in
Canaan, CT along Sand Rd. in the vicinity of Robbin’s Swamp WMA and
one other in Great Barrington, MA at Fountain Pond Park.
These were all fresh, and undoubtedly successfully overwintered. Also
of note, good numbers of Giant Swallowtail have also been reported
this week in the Champlain Valley of Vermont (VTleps), along with one
or two other CT reports further south. Expect another bonanza of these
during the summer months.
Spicebush Swallowtail (Pterourus troilus) 10+ fresh (most in Canaan,
CT)
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Pterourus glaucus) 5 or 6
Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes asterias) 10+
** White-M Hairstreak (Parhassius m-album) 2 males (Sheffield, MA) at
low, small ‘purpleish’ composites.
Silvery Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus) 3 (Sheffield, MA)
Eastern Tailed Blue (Everes comyntas) 5+
American Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) 12+
** Common Checkered Skipper (Pyrgus communis) 1 fresh male, Canaan, CT
at one of the many little limestone quarries along Sand Rd. A rarity
in the New England states and yet another species to look out for this
year….
Northern Broken Dash (Wallengrenia egeremet) 10+ (Sheffield, MA)
Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) 1 (Sheffield, MA)
Hobomok Skipper (Poanes hobomok) 2 (Canaan, CT)
Juvenal’s Duskywing (Erynnis juvenalis) 5+
Monarch (Danaus plexippus) 10+ (Sheffield & Canaan). Some females
ovipositing on new Milkweed shoots.
Common Ringlet (Coenonympha inornata) 10+
Meadow Fritillary (Boloria bellona) 12+ (Sheffield, MA)
Silver Bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene) 10+ (Sheffield, MA)
Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) 1 male, fresh – early (Canaan, CT)
Pearl Crescent (Phycoides tharos) 40+ common
Sulphurs & Whites – plenty about.
