[Ctleps-l] Tawny Marbled Minor

I did my first blacklighting of the year at my Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
(Westchester co, NY) survey site last night. A surprise visitor was a Tawny
Marbled Minor (Oligia latruncula). This is a European Noctuid that I've been
getting regularly on western Long Island for the 10+ years I've been doing
moths. And for that period of time, it seemed confined to that area. Other
than people joining in on my moth outings, it's possible that I may be the
only person to have seen this species in North America. The individual seen
last night marks the first indication that I have seen of a range expansion
(keeping in mind that there aren't people doing this all over the place).
And if the species has reached Pound Ridge, it may now be in Connecticut. If
you want to see what a Tawny Marble Minor looks like, go to my web site
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ , click the moth category, the Moths of
Jamaica Bay, and Apameini in the rightmost column.

Some butterfly notes from the reservation. I would think I could have racked
up a lot of record early dates if I had been looking for butterflies instead
of migrant birds the last few weeks. But with May 26 as the starting point,
all the late May emerging species appear fully out. On May 26, I recorded a
record early Harris' Checkerspot and today I recorded European Skipper for
what must be the first May records. I also heard of an Appalachian Brown
being seen on the 26th.
