Hey all,
Had a frustrating experience looking for odonates around here, with the
high volume of people taking up the prime spots, and the fact I had a very
low number of odes to target. I hiked/waded down the 8 mile River from
Chapman Falls for like a half mile. I did not see much at all on the
river, with an occasional flyby and an extremely rare instance where
something perched. I had a total of 4 dragonflies that I managed to get in
hand, with a bunch more seen vaguely flying, but not anywhere near the
abundance I expected in mid June.
Common Baskettail - 10+ (mostly high overhead but netted a couple)
Prince Baskettail? - 3 (a large species over 20 feet high flying in and out
of the trees with many bands on wing, seems too high for 12 spotted
skimmers?)
Green Darner - 2
Common Whitetail - 1
Eastern Pondhawk - 1 male
Slaty Skimmer - 5 (4 dark blue males and one female)
Spangled Skimmer - 1 female
Maine Snaketail - 1 (perched on rock, the only new species)
Lancet Clubtail - 20+ (away from and near the water)
Clubtail sp. (a yellow dominated large species that never landed,
Dragonhunter?)
Clubtail sp. or River Cruiser? (Black with small white spots/rings visible
on abdomen in flight, and never perching)
Leps seen included:
SSS
Pearl Crescent
Summer Azure
Red Admiral
Little Wood Satyr
Other sites on Connecticut River: zilch, nada
West Rock Ridge (last week): Hoary Edge
Had three Banded Hairstreak pupa emerge yesterday so keep an eye out
